Asst. Prof. Dr. Hakan Kayı

Dr. Kayı obtained his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the Chemical Engineering Department of Hacettepe University in 2000.

Following graduation with honor degree, he worked at a textile company for a couple of months. Then he started his master studies at the Chemical Engineering Department of Hacettepe University in Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Alper’s Research Group. He became a research assistant in Thermodynamics and Unit Operations subsection in 2001. He got his M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering in 2003. During his master studies he worked on the synthesis, characterization and modeling of smart (stimuli-responsive) polymers. He mainly used solution polymerization methods and artificial neural networks for the modeling and prediction of the stimuli-responsive properties.

In the beginning of 2004, he got a full PhD scholarship from the German Research Foundation (DFG - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and moved to Erlangen, Germany and joined Prof. Timothy Clark's research group at the Computer-Chemie-Centrum. He worked on the parameterization of the transition metals and halogens for the development of one of the leading commercial molecular modeling software in the world. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry from Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany in 2009.

At the end of 2009, he started his postdoctoral studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. He worked on an astrochemistry and astrobiology related project which was financially supported by the W.M. Keck Foundation, University of Hawaii, and the NASA Astrobiology Institute under the guidance of Prof. Ralf I. Kaiser and Prof. John D. Head.

Following succesfully completion of the project in August 2011, he moved to Austin, Texas to work with Prof. James E. Boggs (R.I.P.) and Prof. Isaac B. Bersuker at the University of Texas at Austin as a postdoctoral research associate. He performed highly correlated level calculations on various systems to indicate the role of pseudo-Jahn Teller effect in the bending instability of molecules and the deviations from Born-Oppenheimer theory.

Since March 2013, he has been working as an Assistant Professor at the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Department of Atılım University. His current research  is mainly focused on design, modeling and simulation of engineering materials using quantum chemical methods. He is also interested in artificial neural networks, astrochemistry, organometallic chemistry and drug design.
